Puttu is a breakfast dish popular in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka in South India, as well as Sri Lanka. In Malayalam, puttu means “portioned.” It’s made of steamed ground rice cylinders layered with coconut shavings, and it’s often filled with a sweet or savoury filling. Puttu is served hot with sweet sides like palm sugar or banana, or curries like dal, chickpeas, mutton, fish, or chicken. Puttu is eaten in Bhatkal with ghee and sugar or Paya as a side dish.
